Understanding Macronutrients

Protein, carbohydrate, and fat — what each one does, and how they fit together on a plate.

Macronutrients are the components of food we need in gram quantities: protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Alcohol also supplies energy but is not a nutrient. Everything else — vitamins and minerals — is needed in far smaller amounts and is grouped as micronutrients.

Carbohydrate

Carbohydrates are the body's most accessible fuel, particularly for higher-intensity activity and the brain. They range from free sugars to intact starches and fibre. The form matters more than the total: oats, potatoes, legumes, and whole grains behave very differently from sugar-sweetened drinks.

Fat

Fat carries fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, supports cell membranes and hormone production, and makes food palatable. Unsaturated fats from olive oil, nuts, seeds, and oily fish are emphasised in most dietary guidance; the essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids must come from food.

Protein

Protein is primarily structural and functional rather than a preferred fuel. It is also the most satiating macronutrient per calorie for most people, which is one reason higher-protein meals tend to hold hunger longer.

Do ratios matter?

Within broad ranges, food quality and total energy intake influence health and body composition more than the precise split. A reasonable default is a protein source at each meal, plenty of plants, mostly intact carbohydrates, and unsaturated fats — then adjust to your appetite, activity, and preferences.
